Green, Dirty, Guilty

I'm not sure if I've breathed too deeply the hippie wind blowing in the northwest, but I've got trash and things green on my mind. Like millions of others, Austin and I have been trying to slowly adapt to a "green" lifestyle. We do simple things that I'm sure most people do. We have realized that going green takes time and is a lifestyle adjustment. Some aspects of our lives may never be considered green while we hope others are. But in general I like to think that most people are aware of the need to take care of our earth.

I get a bit discouraged when I go to the mall with my husband and as we are walking in there is a girl throwing the trash out of her car onto the parking lot. Not just like a big gulp cup, although she did throw one of those out. But she had two plastic bags stuffed with trash that she chucked out of her car. She looked at us, started laughing then threw a few more cups and empty containers on the ground. She jumped in the passenger seat and the car started to back out. Austin and I stood there flabbergasted about 10 feet behind her car and considered our options:

1. Pick up her trash for her.
2. Get all authoritative on her, get her license plate and call the cops.
3. Run to the car and ask her to please throw her trash away in a proper place.
4. Leave it be.

Obviously aware of what she had done and aware of Austin and I standing there, she got out. The driver gave her no support cowering in the front seat. First of all I don't like drama and secondly, I really don't like dramatic confrontations. This immediately had the feel of both. Situations like these make me start shaking inside.

She explained to us her reasons and opinions:
- everyone does it
- it is no big deal
- the courteous thing for us to do would have been to ask her to throw it away properly
- there was a guy that got paid to clean up the parking lot every night. It was his job so it didn't matter

We calmly listened to her and tried to validate her feelings while expressing our own concerns:
- it reflects badly on our city
- we need to take care of our environment
- the courteous thing to do is not litter in the first place
- it's against the law
- the guy isn't being paid to pick up trash in the parking lot as if it were a dumping ground

We finally seemed to come to a happy accord that she would pick up her trash.

Yada, yada, yada

Walking back to our car 45 minutes later we found that she had opened up the bags of trash and scattered it everywhere leaving a huge mess for that "guy" that supposedly gets paid for cleaning up after lazy humans. The shaking inside of me resumed.

Having a dramatic confrontation in the parking lot of the local mall over someones trash left me feeling dirty.

As if I didn't have enough trash happenings I randomly got this in the mail:

The address is correct, but the name on it is for Ron Smith. What do you do when you get a gossip magazine? You read it, because even though it's completely ridiculous, it is a guilty pleasure. And before I sent it on its merry way I discovered that:

- Katie and Tom say that they have never been happier, so stop those rumors people!!
- Britney's getting back into shape ya'll
- Jennifer Aniston may or may not have had plastic surgery

Somewhere in the world there is a Ron Smith cursing that he does not know this vital information.

You are so cute! I love reading your posts! I meant to comment about the five things you love about Austin... Dave and I loved them! They were so cute! You for sure should come visit in June, or anytime! Sorry about your unwanted confrontation, and thanks for the latest gossip!

That made me shake a little just to read it. What is wrong with people? Hopefully, someday her life will come full circle, and she will find herself as the one who is paid to clean up other people's filth. I just wish I got to see it.
Thanks for the info on Katie and Tom. I have been really worried. Everyday I wake up with one question on my mind: But are they REALLY happy?
Maybe we will never really know for sure...

I'm sorry about th dirty confrontation. It makes me a little sick when someone is so deliberately selfish.

Thanks for posting about OK. I saw it at Shelbs and didn't have a chance to crack it open.

Margaret,
Are you for rizzle? I can not believe that people would do that. You were in quite the predicament. I am not sure what I would have done, but if I would have confronted them, I would have lost it I have a feeling.
As for OK magazine... you really should stick to the reliable source... People:). I used to be addicted to that blasted magazine, but after Chris banned me from wasting my money on uselessness, I am a happier woman today.

you should have slapped that girl hard in the face for doing that.

I'm sorry for my violent comment... but come on, right? that is really annoying of her.

NO WAY! That is unbelievable! I understand the whole shaking inside thing...I get completely bugged when I see someone flick a cigarette butt out of their car window! Don't they know that is littering too??!! Some people are just ridiculous!

Thanks Natalie. I think I might call you to find a weekend in June. Leaving it up to the boys may not be the best idea.

Sarah, I'm glad you wake up with the same concern I do. Who needs to worry about the environment when Katie Holmes might be unhappy?

Millie, it would appear Ron Smith's subscription is continuing to come to me, if you ever need an update on the gossip, leave me word.

Kara, I really would've loved to see how you handled the situation. You always do well in those awkward predicaments. Austin may ban me from OK soon.

Allison, I welcome violent comments. No worries.

Heather, I know. I don't understand some people, and I'm sure they don't understand me.

Marg, I see you have evolved since leaving the cast and crew of Jerry Springer. . . okay I'm just kidding! Wow! I can't believe that girl! She has deep rooted issues. And also, little does she know she is now THE LAUGHING STOCK OF THE INTERNET!! DA HAH AHA HA AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

That is so weird to me...throwing trash in the garbage is the easiest of greeniest. Somewhere out there Al Gore is crying...

Really, she just dumped her trash right out in the parking lot? Wow, I will never understand some people.

The OK totally took me back to days of sitting in the school house reading US. My sister made homemade Oreo's today after I gave her the recipe from memory. The recipe that you so kindly shared with us all way back when. Oh the things that stick in your memory :)

1) ooooooooooooohh that just made the little hairs on my neck stand straight (if it were kate, it would have elevated that single inch long hair as well)!!!

2) YOU handled it as well as you could have, and i hope she got a flat tire driving over the jack knife she "threw away" on the parking lot ground.

3) did you know britney's lost 39 lbs. AND she and kevin just went on a hawaiian vacay...AND they're both wearing the same bathing suits as they wore in 2004 when they went on aNOTHER hawaiian vacay?!?!

4) i think you should post about how you and aust have been able to go green. i have no idea where to begin.

Are you sure Austin didn't subscribe under the name "Ron"- we all know he loves celebrity gossip :)
I can't belive the trash girl- err

Oooh! I'm sure you were very cool and calm during your confrontation. Things like that make me shake too, even though I think I'm so tough! Good for you!! We really try to be as green as we can in our current situation. The greener you go, the more you realize how many people don't care and the madder it makes you!! At least that's how I feel!

Aaaah, trashy mags! Gotta say, I love coming across current issues that I didn't pay for!! It's nice to know what REALLY going on out there!!!

Elzabar- I love the evil laugh...I can hear it now.

Jana- Al Gore and the Indian are crying.

Maleina- I'm so glad you still remember the Oreo recipe. It really is easy and so delicious! I totally remember reading US during work. Man, that was a great job.

Merzy- So...you think Brit and K-Fed are heading for a reunion? Let me know your thoughts.
Also, maybe I will post about what we are doing for green living sometime. I don't really feel like any of it is all that great at this point, just basic things. Perhaps I'll get my thoughts together and post on it. Me wub ewe.

Wes- I actually did keep saying, "Austin, are you sure you didn't get an OK subscription?" or "Why did you tell them your name was Ron?" He still won't fess up.

Adrienne- Its true Adrienne, the more important something becomes to you you notice a stark contrast with those who don't share its importance.

I can not believe that hoochie mama! What a stupid, mean woman. Those people make me so angry!! I think next time I see someone throw garbage out of their car, I'm going to do everything I can to run to the car, pick it up, open their front door, and dump it back on them. Seriously.

Happy Birthday! You know I love ya more than my luggage!

I cannot believe this story! (By the way - this is Nicole from Georgia, and yes, I am stalking your blog through Wes') Anyways, Jon and I just moved from California, and of course I turned green while living there. And it makes me furious how non-green thinking people are here in the South. Like the garbage company only recycles newspaper, not white paper. And I feel sick to my stomach everytime I throw paper away now. Anyways, you guys look so happy and the Munchkin is adorable!
